ROLE SUMMARY

The Financial Controller has overall responsibility for the site’s financial management function, overseeing both Accounting and Controlling activities. This role ensures financial integrity, compliance, and robust internal controls while delivering forward-looking financial insights to support executive decision-making and operational performance.

The Financial Controller partners closely with the Finance Director, site leadership, and Group Finance to ensure accurate reporting, strong governance, and effective financial planning in a complex industrial environment.

 

YOUR MISSION

• Provide leadership and overall direction for Accounting and Controlling functions
• Ensure timely, accurate, and compliant financial reporting in accordance with IFRS and regulatory requirements
• Own the integrity of the balance sheet, income statement, cash flow, and management reporting
• Design, implement, and oversee effective internal controls and financial governance frameworks, including finance policies and procedures
• Collaborate with the Finance Director on financial strategy and long-term direction
• Oversee month-end, half-year, and year-end close processes
• Coordinate preparation of monthly and annual financial statements for Group and senior leadership
• Review and approve key accounting judgments, estimates, and reconciliations
• Ensure robust cost accounting, inventory control, and fixed asset management processes
• Oversee intercompany accounting, tax compliance, treasury activities, and statutory reporting
• Act as the primary liaison with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory bodies
• Drive continuous improvement in accounting systems, internal controls, and end-to-end finance processes
• Lead budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial planning cycles
• Provide variance analysis, performance dashboards, and financial insights to senior leadership
• Coordinate all Group reporting requirements, ensuring timeliness, completeness, and accuracy
• Oversee cost center management with regular performance reviews
• Support capital investment analysis, business cases, and post-investment reviews
• Prepare ad-hoc financial analysis and presentations for executive leadership
• Partner with site and corporate functions to drive financial discipline and performance improvement

 

YOUR PROFILE

• CPA designation required
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; Master’s degree is an asset
• 8–12 years of progressive finance experience, including senior accounting leadership
• Proven experience overseeing both Accounting and Controlling / FP&A functions
• Strong knowledge of IFRS, internal controls, budgeting, and financial analysis
• Industrial or manufacturing environment experience preferred
• Advanced Excel and ERP proficiency; SAP experience strongly preferred
• Strong financial leadership, business acumen, and analytical mindset
• Excellent financial modelling and decision-making skills
• Confident communicator with strong stakeholder management capabilities
• Ability to balance operational detail with strategic perspective
• Change-oriented mindset with a focus on continuous improvement

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Office-based within an industrial setting (administration building at a pulp mill)
• Occasional extended hours during reporting periods, audits, and budget cycles
• Evening, weekend, or holiday work may be required at times
• Periodic site walk-throughs in mill areas (PPE required)
• Fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
• Regular engagement with executive leadership, auditors, and regulatory bodies

This role is based in Hinton, Alberta, located approximately 20 minutes east of Jasper National Park and about 2½ hours west of Edmonton. Surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of the Alberta Rockies, Hinton is a welcoming, modern community of approximately 10,000 residents that offers an excellent quality of life for individuals and families.
